The Simpsons, Season 2, on DVD
Arguably the most creative sitcom to hit TV in many a year, The
Simpsons' second season is now available in a special collector's DVD set.
The box includes all 22 of Year Two's episodes, and quality of the
full screen picture and Dolby Digital surround sound does justice to the series
- as well as to the DVD format. In fact, while the show has always been billed
as having surround sound, the audio finally comes through properly on the DVD,
something it has never really done when we've watched the show on satellite
and/or cable TV.
Season Two, which originally ran in 1990-91, comes on four discs,
the fourth of which also includes a bundle of extra material. You get
interviews with James L. Brooks and Matt Groening, Bart on the American Music
Awards (with commentary), "Do The Bartman" video (with optional commentary),
"Deep, Deep Trouble" video (with optional commentary), "Do The Bartman
(Director's Cut)" - video, and director David Silverman on the creation of an
episode. There's also footage from the Emmy Awards, 3 Butterfinger commercials,
and some early drawings.
The only real downside to the set is the annoying menu that comes
up when you first insert the disc. It's a screen of four Simpsons characters,
with an "enter" button in the center. To get to the episodes themselves, you
have to press the button and watch the heads spin around, mixing and matching
them with the different bodies until the correct combination comes up. It's a
pain in the butt.
